Practise with Hazel

It all begins with the breath…

You can work with Hazel at her studio in Thirroul, or invite her to teach at your place, or organisation.

Bringing over 25 years yoga experience to teaching, Hazel likes to keep classes at her own studio small so that she can focus on you. This traditional style, handed down from teacher to student, takes us to the roots of yoga.

Classes are stabilising and balancing, both physically and mentally. Helping you with mobility, flexibility, agility, strength and the ability to relax.  Did we mention friendly! And suitable for all ages.

Hazel tailors classes and workshops with tried and tested use of asana (shape-making), vinyasa krama (wise progression or sequencing of movements), breath-work (pranayama), rest (savasana) and meditation.   These combine to help bring us to a more easeful way of dealing with life and all it throws at us. On and off the mat.

She teaches across the Illawarra (and beyond) through small classes, guest teaching and working with allied health professionals.

See Classes and Bookings pages for details including classes, private lessons and personal practice. Or get in touch to have something just for you or your clients.

About Hazel

It all begins with being curious. And bringing in kindness.

“My first yoga class was in Glasgow in 1990, though I remember having a go at yoga during my teens using an old paperback book of Mum’s.   Everyone wore black at that Glasgow Iyengar class as was the way then.” Since then, Hazel has had many teachers, in UK and Australia, with the two main lineages being Ashtanga (Pattabhi Jois) and Iyengar (BKS Iyengar), both of whom studied under Sri Krishnamacharya (the father of modern yoga). Her teacher’s teacher TKV Desikachar also studied with him, as he was his son.

Hazel admits to waves of commitment over the years. Who doesn’t experience that? But she is the first to admit that yoga has supported her through both the difficult and the good times. Through ongoing general health maintenance, but more notably, through a traumatic grief and losing her sense of self for several years. Yoga helped Hazel re-connect to herself, and more, by moving away from dis-ease towards equilibrium and a steadier, more stable life.

It helps in the secure times and when the world around spins seemingly out of control. And helps her work with students with sensitivity and allied health and associated professionals with discretion.

Yoga with Hazel is considered and thoughtful.

For you + your life + your own needs. Whoever you are.

That was amazing. Your personal attention to safety, options for poses and careful guidance was the best. I wasn’t sure about coming to this retreat as hurt my back doing yoga [elsewhere] last year and took a while to recover. You know your stuff. I wish you were doing another class here.

Drawing on a wide skill set, Hazel always sets a purposeful, relaxing and ultimately highly satisfying class. The carefully planned schedule always encourages personal exploration underpinned by a thorough explanation and a caring presentation style.
